42: Big Damn Birds

November 27, 2017

When researching Thunder Birds, remember that there are two separate concepts people may be thinking of: Native American legendary birds, and the bird that some cryptozoologists think exist. There is some overlap and it can veer into a disrespectful zone. We aren’t Native American, we did not grow up with this legend, we did our best to differentiate the legends vs. the cryptids vs. the attested avians, but please tread respectfully and use Native American sources/resources if you want to learn about Thunderbirds.

Photo from the USC Archive, by way of Hoax.org.

His Royal Highness is only lightly documented in secondary sources, so most of this episode came from newspaper articles. However, here’s the original Hoaxes.org article that introduced me to this interesting character:

  • Dr. Hahn’s downtown ghost [1]

23: Yappy Howlidays - Christmas in July

Devon would like to thank PBS and Zoobooks for her earliest introduction to wolf facts, as well as lots of wolf tee-shirts for her extra coolness in middle school. In addition to just Generally Knowing A Lot Of Shit, Devon used the following sources:

The thumbnail image is from the Oregon Native Son newspaper, as archived by the Beeswax Project: http://maritimearchaeological.org/beeswax-wreck/history/, visible large here:

Part One: Beeswax Galleon

My main resource for the Beeswax Galleon information was the excellent Beeswax Wreck Project homepage: http://www.nagagroup.org/BeesWax/gallery/gallery.htm

Wikipedia has an entry that I used: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beeswax_wreck

The intro with Loretta LeGuee and Norman comes from this Seattle Times article: http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/beeswax-from-centuries-old-shipwrecks-still-found-on-oregon-beaches/

Information on the Manila trade from this Oregon Encyclopedia article: https://oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/beeswax_shipwreck/#.WYybY1WGOpo

And info on the latest sightings and their credibility from this Oregon Live page: http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2013/08/search_for_centuries-old_galle.html

Part Two: Feet of the Salish Sea

This one relied heavily on Wikipedia for the feet:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salish_Sea_human_foot_discoveries

And the explanation of what the Salish Sea is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salish_Sea

I also referenced this Washington Post article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/02/11/severed-feet-still-inside-shoes-keep-mysteriously-washing-up-on-pacific-northwest-shores/?utm_term=.5c006018b4f4

And this Guardian article: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/23/british-columbia-canada-human-feet-mystery

I note this in the podcast itself, but the Air Nike theory, the case of Stefan Zahorujko, and the title come from SeanMunger.com: https://seanmunger.com/2015/03/24/flostam-and-jetsam-part-i-the-grisly-floating-feet-of-the-salish-sea/
